Overview:

The summer season crowds have diminished yet the weather remains temperate, leaving the perfect time to escape to the rugged cliffs, picturesque fishing villages and uncrowded seaside landscapes surrounding America’s Oldest Seaport, Gloucester, Massachusetts. This charming coastal region known as the birthplace of fried clams offers not only great seafood but tons of history spread throughout its picturesque seaside backdrop.
We’ll cruise our way through stunning scenery along the Essex River and from Salem Sound to the mysterious Misery Island while hearing stories of its rich and intriguing past.
History will come to life in the historic homes of Salem and Ipswich and beautiful botanic gardens along with unique natural rock formations, and magnificent views of the Atlantic will connect us with nature.
Get your bag packed and ready for a relaxing, yet adventurous journey into the coastal charms of Cape Ann communities.
Day One: Purgatory Chasm

A unique and otherworldly geological wonder lies right along our path to Cape Ann so we must make a stop!
The amazing and spectacular Purgatory Chasm, formed by a torrent of ancient glacial water, has endless heights and depths to explore from the half mile trail leading through its colossal rock formations.
Find yourself in the narrow Purgatory Squeeze or Devil’s Corn Crib after passing through the Devil’s Coffin and towering Lover’s Leap.
Picnic Lunch:

Before our rocky adventure, let’s enjoy an included picnic lunch right here as we share all the fun myths and legends of the area.
Ocean House at Bass Rocks:

Soon we’ll find ourselves among the crashing waves of the Atlantic at our new home in Ocean House at Bass Rocks.
Take time to relax and breathe in the fresh ocean air before our included lobster roll dinner right here at the hotel where we can just sit back and relax and enjoy the evening by the sea.
Day Two: Relax Among the Atlantic

This morning wake up to the sound of the ocean as you enjoy a leisurely morning at the hotel where you can just sit with a book and relax, take a seaside stroll, or find a scenic spot to sit on the rocks.
Essex River Cruise:

It’s time to head out for a stroll at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for more serene nature. This beautiful refuge is located on Plum Island, a barrier beach island known as a top bird watching destination that is hometo 300 species of resident and migratory birds.
Such a great place to appreciate nature on the boardwalk trails of varying length to choose from. Take your time as you wander and explore or just relax in a quiet, scenic spot.
Charming Ipswich:

The sweet coastal town of Ipswich is perfect for wandering among preciously preserved 17th to 19th century houses and charming shop lined streets.
Take your time to stroll and take in all the historic atmosphere.
Hopeful Owl Prowl:

We will try our best to set up an adventurous Owl Prowl for this evening where a stroll along a wooded path or near the dunes may result in the elusive call of owls or other creatures of the night.
The location of an included dinner will be dependent on the Owl Prowl timing and location.
Day Three: Misery Island

Today we sail away through Salem Sound on the Essex Heritage’s Naumkeag to the mysterious Misery Island.
Along our journey, we’ll hear riveting tales about the rich history of the harbor and how the islands acquired their unique name.
Once we land on the secluded beach, explore the rocky shoreline and wander the trails and hidden coves and see what treasures unfold.
Ropes Mansion Garden:

While we’re here in historic Salem, let’s follow the town’s uniquely rich architectural heritage to the remarkable Ropes Mansion whose Colonial Revival gardens are open for wandering.
A further stroll through the Chestnut Street Historic District will take us back in time to an architectural delight of early 19th century stately mansions.
Local Dinner:

Enjoy an included dinner at a great local spot in nearby Manchester by the Sea before returning for another serene night with the sounds of the Atlantic at Ocean House.
Day Four: New England Botanic Garden

Let’s enjoy this lovely September day and take a step into the wonderful world of plants and flowers at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill.
Take your time to wander through the formal gardens, woodlands, and conservatories filled with greenery and colorful blooms.
Lunch will be included right here at the Farmer and the Fork Café.
Now sit back and relax as we make our journey back home to New Jersery filled with all the soothing experience of Cape Ann’s coastal charm.
Pricing & Departures:
Departs South Plainfield High School at the end of Lane Avenue at 7:00 AM and returns at approximately 7:30 PM
Departs Madison’s Kings Road Parking Lot, 62 Kings Rd. at 7:45 AM and returns at approximately 6:45 PM
Departs Ridgewood’s Graydon Pool at the corner of Linwood Ave & Northern Parkway at 8:30 AM and returns at approximately 6:00 PM
Price per person is $ Twin & $ Single. No reservations accepted without a deposit of $150 per person. Make checks payable to Group Tours & Travel and mail to the included address. Final payment is due July 5, 2025. Deposits are fully refundable if cancellation occurs on or before July 5, 2025. There are no refunds if cancellation occurs after July 5, 2025. Travel protection/cancellation coverage is available and highly recommended (approximately 10% of the total cost of the tour) but not included. One piece of luggage per person and one carry-on are permitted. Group Tours is not responsible for any delays, cancellations, injuries or circumstances beyond its control and reserves the right to change this itinerary. All trip components are subject to change in accordance with Government, State and Local guidelines and/or mandates. This tour will run rain or shine.

- Our philosophy of travel involves getting out of the ordinary to experience other cultures and places with an open minded attitude and flexibility. Since as in daily life, anything can and will happen, let’s embrace these situations with acceptance and understanding because they will either lead to an unexpected, amazing experience or positive learning experience.
- If anyone brings along excess baggage such as incessant complaining, under the breath rude comments, outward negativity or other such behaviors that infect the entire group or individuals, we have the exclusive right to remove them from the tour at their own cost with no refunds. (yes, this means you)
- If any major concerns arise during a tour, please just come talk to us and we’ll work it out!
