Salem, Massachusetts, is arguably the ultimate place in the world to experience the fun and excitement that Halloween creates. There is never a dull moment on this tour when we visit Salem during this exceptional celebration. This weekend, thousands of costumed visitors will descend upon this historic community, geared up for fun and ready to take in the thrill of its festival-type atmosphere. The Haunted Happenings 2020 Salem Festival is an exciting event like no other. It features street closings that create a vibrant open-air pedestrian mall with numerous food and craft vendors and more. In addition to the excitement of Halloween, we have added many historic and fun attractions in Salem. This includes a dramatic short play that was written from the transcripts of the witch trial of Bridget Bishop, convicted of being a witch and then sentenced to death. Other highlights in Salem are: The House of Seven Gables, The Salem Witch Museum, a trolley tour of the city and more. Our hotel accommodations are an extra bonus to the tour. The hotel has recently undergone an extensive renovation and features many attractive public areas. To cap off our weekend, we are treated to a memorable costume dinner party in the comfort of our hotel on Saturday night; bring your costume!
Day 1. This morning we head north to New England. In Hartford, Connecticut we enjoy an included lunch. Accommodations for the next two evenings are at the Hilton Hotel in Woburn, Massachusetts. The hotel features attractive public areas, a lounge, restaurant, indoor pool and fitness center. Tonight, following an included dinner, we visit the Salem Witch Museum. This is the most visited museum in Salem. It features an insightful sight-and-sound presentation that brings to life many of the horrifying events that occurred during the witchcraft hysteria that gripped Salem in 1692. The drama is more frightening when we realize that it really happened.
Day 2. It’s Halloween time, and we will see more costumed people, at one time, than almost anywhere else on earth. Today, this small town becomes the center of the largest Halloween celebration in the nation. Salem was founded in 1626 and grew to become a major world port, where great fortunes were made and magnificent mansions and buildings were constructed. We begin our day with an hour-long fun and informative trolley tour of Salem. It provides us with an overview of many of the places we may visit on our own in the next two days and a historical perspective of this fascinating community. Next, we visit the historic House of the Seven Gables (1668), the setting of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s famous novel. The next few hours are our own to take in the excitement, festivities and other attractions around this historic city. These include time to explore the Halloween festival, browse in its numerous shops, sightsee and lunch on our own. Another highlight of our day is when we see the play, Cry Innocent, a reenactment of the pre-trial examination of Bridget Bishop, an accused witch. After a fun-filled day, we return to our hotel. Dinner this evening is in the comfort of our hotel, and we are treated to a private Halloween costume party in the company of our fellow passengers. Get ready to laugh and have fun!
Day 3. We are not done touring Salem yet. We return to Salem and visit The Custom House, built in 1819. Today, the U.S. Custom House contains exhibits that relate to its unique history. On view is the office of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the famous American author whose three-year-long stint in the Salem Custom House inspired his classic novel, The Scarlet Letter. This waterfront location also allows us access to walk on the historic pier (1805), view Wharf Light Station (1871) and shop in the Waite and Peirce Building (1770), for authentic and exotic goods to benefit Salem Maritime Museum. The rest of our morning and early afternoon are free to lunch on our own, continue browsing and taking in the sights and sounds of the city. Our ride home passes quickly as we reflect on all the exciting and memorable things we have done.
