The Catskills are not just home to beautiful mountains painted in colors of the fall season with cool, crisp mountain fresh air but are also home to the fabulous, one-of-a-kind Roxbury Motel. The funky, hip vibe surrounding you here is not only FUN but will instantly reconnect you with your sense of wonder. There is no better place to unwind, relax, and refresh than in a Roxbury room that feels like you stepped into a dream. Created and designed by Greg and Joe, expats from Broadway, each room theme is inspired by films and TV shows from the 60s and 70s and brings with it a magical and whimsical experience to our stay in The Catskills. First registrations get first pick of their unique room! The Roxbury will even have their outdoor extra super-heated pool open for your enjoyment along with a hot tub and sauna, and for our walking pleasure, an easy, walkable trail system that leads to their beautiful 50-foot waterfall.
While here in the heart of the Catskills, let’s explore the area! There will be a lovely scenic train ride as we enjoy a delicious lunch, a journey through limestone corridors, history at an operating mill, dreamlike sculptures, and quaint, rustic towns. Let’s get traveling!
Day One: Howe Caverns & The Roxbury!
Today we travel through rolling farmland, up steep hillsides and past lakes and rivers glimmering with the reflections of changing leaves to Howe Caverns, where we can explore 6-million-year-old caves that are located 156 feet below the Earth’s surface. Our guided tour will wind us through limestone corridors, into cavernous galleries, under massive boulders to a subterranean riverbed carved over countless millennia. It’s a spectacular sight to see how solid rock seems to be fluid in the depths of the cave, creating interesting formations and mysterious grottos veer off into distant, unexplored passages. We’ll enjoy an included lunch here before heading to The Roxbury for our much-awaited step into our fabulous, themed room experience! The night will be yours to spend as you please with an included dinner in town at the wonderful Chappie’s.
Day Two: Roxbury Walking Tour, Stratton Falls & Lunch in Margaretville
How lucky we will be this morning when we wake up in the magnificent surroundings of our spectacular themed room! There’s no better way to start the day before exploring the Catskills. After a fabulous breakfast, we will take in all the rustic charm of downtown Roxbury on our informative walking tour. As we stroll down the maple tree lined streets, we’ll encounter a wide range of architectural styles from the most humble Greek Revival to the most elaborate late Victorian. We’ll pass the Jay Gould Reformed Church, lovely Kirkside Park, the former summer estate of Helen Gould Shepard, and an 1872 train depot where we’ll hear intriguing stories straight from the past.
Downtown Roxbury isn’t the only place with fascinating history. The sister property to our home at the Roxbury Motel is our next stop where we will learn the stories and see photographs of the origins of The Roxbury’s Mansion. Not only is this place utterly and brilliantly magnificent, but also has a very interesting past. Just when you think this place can’t be any more spectacular, we’ll be cast under the spell of the glistening cascade of Stratton Falls and its millennia old rock formations on our short walk along the picturesque nature trail. A delightful, included lunch awaits us in the shabby chic Catskills village of Margaretville, a blossoming artist community.
Day Two: Delaware & Ulster Railroad, Hobart Book Village &
Bull and Garland Pub
This afternoon we’ll climb aboard the vintage railcars of the Delaware & Ulster Railroad and be whisked away through the scenic, legendary Catskills. Enjoy the gentle breeze as the train meanders along quiet streams, rolling hills and lush forests. Charming villages dot the landscape and nostalgia reigns as the antique train cars bring us back to the Golden Age of Railroading. If we’re lucky, we may even get to experience a train robbery!
In a town with only 1 coffee shop, 1 convenience store and a local hardware store hides a whopping 6 independent bookstores, art gallery, home goods and vintage clothing shops, and 2 antique stores. Yes, we’re talking about Hobart Book Village, a rustic but charming small town hidden in the Catskills offering an eclectic array of reading for people who love books! This evening we’ll have some time to walk through town and browse the shops before enjoying our included dinner at the lovely Bull & Garland Pub. Then back to The Roxbury for one more night of amazing!
Day Three: Hanford Mills Museum & Lunch at Bread Alone
This morning we will see sawdust fly! Our guided tour of Hanford Mills Museum, one of the few operating water powered mills in the country, will feature demonstrations of their 1926 waterwheel and historic woodworking and milling machinery: a first-hand view of history in action. A spectacular lunch awaits at Bread Alone, a local, family-owned bakery whose philosophy to create simple, honest, breads and food is revealed in every delicious bite.
Day Three: Brunel Sculpture Gardens & Fabulous Furniture
Next, we step into a magical place dedicated to the mysteries and grandeur of nature, the Brunel Sculpture Garden. Our guided garden tour will reveal Brunel’s extraordinary dream encompassing Native American culture, native horticulture and photographic arts all bound together in a beautiful nature sanctuary.
Before we leave for New Jersey, we must make one more stop at Steve Heller’s Fabulous Furniture. As soon as we are close to his shop you will immediately see what makes him so fabulous!
