Morris Jumel Mansion:
Today we’ll visit Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence, the Morris Jumel Mansion perched on a striking rise in the Washington Heights neighborhood that was once the ancestral homeland of the Lenape.
Built in 1765, this home has borne witness to much of New York City’s rich and diverse history. The grand Georgian mansion with its monumental portico and octagonal drawing room was the setting for some of the colony’s most fashionable parties. Later during the Revolutionary War, it served as headquarters for General George Washington along with British and Hessian military, then became a tavern before the Jumel’s purchased the property and spared no expense in refurbishing it to its former glory.
A guided outdoor tour will teach us about the history, legacy, architecture, and grounds before moving inside for a self-guided tour of the interior.
Sylvan Terrace Stroll:
After, if you feel intrigued, take a stroll down Sylvan Terrace, a hidden gem where you feel transported back in time as the sidewalk leads to a cobblestone street lined on both sides with amazing 19th century wooden row houses.
It turns out that Sylvan Terrace was originally the carriage path leading to the front of the Morris Jumel Mansion, so it’s definitely worth a wander!
Lunch at Sylvia's:
Next we’ll enjoy an included lunch nearby at Sylvia’s, the Queen of Soul Food.
The High Bridge:
With our souls all filled, we better take a walk. Luckily, the newly refurbished High Bridge is right here, the oldest standing bridge that connects Manhattan and the Bronx and one that has an interesting history.
Don’t worry about traffic, this is pedestrian only! Walk off your lunch as much as you please and take in the scenic views along the way.
