Just mention the name Hershey and any American’s mouth starts to yearn for the sweet taste of Chocolate. Chocolate is not the only thing that is sweet on this tour! To begin with our accommodations are in the luxurious Hotel Hershey, a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America and is known for its refined elegance, signature service and abundant amenities. Here in Chocolate Town, USA, we will enjoy an historic trolley tour of the town and visit Chocolate World. On our second day, we will explore the history and folklore of the Amish and Mennonites in their Pennsylvania homelands. As we view their beautiful farmlands, we learn about Pennsylvania Dutch farm life from its inception to the present day. We also lunch in an authentic Amish home with their family. So, pack your bags, Lancaster won’t wait.
Day 1. We head west this morning to the Chocolate Capital of the World, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Upon arrival we are treated to an included lunch in the elegance of the Hershey Hotel. Our historical trolley tour will whisk us through the streets of Hershey sharing the story of the town before chocolate even existed in America (gasp!) and of the inspiring life of Milton Hershey. The trolley will drop us off right in front of Chocolate World where we’ll experience Hershey’s Great American Chocolate Tour. Our ride explains how chocolate is made from the bean to the bar. We will definitely need a taste test after this! Accommodations this evening are in the world-renowned Hotel Hershey. Dinner this evening is on our own. There are several restaurants to choose, from fine dining to casual.
Day 2. After breakfast in the Circular Dining Room of our hotel, we depart to Lancaster. Our Lancaster experience begins with a drive through the heart of the Amish Farmlands. Enjoy picturesque scenery as we meander across country roads where time seems to stand still. See the pristine Amish farms, one-room schoolhouses, Amish “phone booths” and farmers working the fields with their horse or mule-drawn plows. We will then have the opportunity to tour an authentic historic farmhouse where an Amish family once lived and worked. Here we will learn in depth about Amish culture and beliefs and what the Amish lifestyle is like today. We will then have a self-guided leisurely tour of their 15-acre farm. Here you can see a wood carver demonstration, visit the Willow Lane one room schoolhouse which will allow you to experience a typical day for an Amish student, feed and pet the goats and sheep, walk to the covered bridge and even ride an Amish scooter! There will be a special treat for everyone: an included authentic buggy ride providing scenic views around the farm. Imagine what it would be like to travel like this every day! Our memorable lunch today will consist of a delicious, family style Penn Dutch feast served with kind and gracious Amish hospitality in a local Amish home. We’ll enjoy hearty and simple Amish favorites from family recipes that have been passed down from mother to daughter for generations. Next, there will be time to browse in Kitchen Kettle Village, a collection of over three dozen unique shops and the nearby Smucker’s Village, a unique destination for any treasure hunter at heart who is always searching for unique and timeless pieces to add to their collection. Our last stop will be the September Farm Cheese where we will learn about the cheese making process and sample 40 plus kinds of cheese! As we depart for New Jersey, filled with delicious cheese, our drive home passes quickly as we reflect on all the fun things we have done on our fun-filled getaway.
