Overview:
Let’s set sail for a Canadian adventure to unspoiled islands dotting the dramatic Bay of Fundy that will capture your heart and imagination. From striking coastal cliff views and serene uncrowded beaches to quaint fishing villages and their historic maritime past, we’ll explore it all.
Starting with a quiet escape to the hidden gem, Grand Manan Island with its stunning coastal scenery, picturesque lighthouses, and relaxed atmosphere we’ll discover all the island’s secret treasures then island hop to explore tiny, darling Deer Island, and the captivating Campobello Island where eagles glide across the vast lawns of the magnificent Roosevelt’s former summer home. Along the way we’ll search for whales and migrating seabirds, splendid sunsets, steps into history, unique artisan crafts, and an abundance of serene moments.
Our journey will begin and end in the lovely state of Maine where we’ll go off the beaten path to quaint towns and villages with sweeping views of rocky coastline and tiny, tucked away artisan galleries and local eateries. This summer, why not take refuge from crowds and tourist traps and join our escape to a coastal place where the power of the sea surrounds us among the rugged coastal beauty of Maine and New Brunswick’s Fundy Islands.
Day One: Grand Manan Island
Once we are whisked away to Maine, we’ll make our way towards the border into Canada where our adventures begin.
In beautiful Blacks Harbour, we’ll board a ferry for a relaxing sail to the port in North Head on enchanting Grand Manan Island.
Marathon Hotel:
The Marathon Hotel, built over a century ago by a retired sea captain will be our home here for the next three nights.
Stepping inside will remind you of a former age as if you brought a steamer trunk instead of wheeled luggage. If you delight in floors that aren’t quite level and walls that could tell stories, then this is your place.
Get settled in then enjoy an included dinner to celebrate our first island night.
Day Two: Enjoy the Morning!
Have a splendid morning enjoying views from the hotel or exploring nearby walkable sights before we set out to explore every nook and cranny of the island.
Swallowtail Lighthouse:
Our exploration starts at the iconic Swallowtail Lighthouse, still an active aid to navigation and the perfect spot for a majestic marine vista. Enjoy the views, climb the 54 steps to the top, and browse three floors of the museum.
Hole in the Wall:
Now we adventure to Hole in the Wall, a unique geological feature carved by the Bay of Fundy over 10,000 years ago.
A short, scenic hike will lead us to this natural wonder and keep your eyes peeled for possible whale sightings.
Sunrise Seafood:
It’s time for a break to enjoy an included local lunch at Sunrise Seafood, so get your taste buds ready.
Grand Harbour:
More exploration awaits in the tiny town of Grand Harbour where you can visit the Grand Manan Museum and delve into local history and browse the nearby shops.
Anchorage Provincial Park:
Another scenic spot is next along the Red Trail Boardwalk of the Anchorage Provincial Park.
Stroll one of the trails or enjoy the sand and twisted sedimentary rock cliffs along the beach in search of marine treasures.
Southwest Head Lighthouse:
At the farthest end of the island lies Southwest Head Lighthouse, set high atop the towering cliffs.
Unparalleled views can be found here, so take a wander and fill your camera with photos.
If Time Allows:
If time allows, we’ll make a stop at Deep Cove Beach, a beach that’s always different with every visit and with rocks in every color, shape, size, and pattern imaginable.
Add Dark Harbor to the list, the only accessible west coast area and one that has interesting folklore.
Long Eddy Point Lighthouse:
Once back home at the Marathon Hotel, enjoy dinner, then if you are up for another exploration, let’s head to the northernmost point on the island, Long Eddy Point Lighthouse and wait for a spectacular sunset.
Day Three: Whale Watching Day
Welcome to our wildlife day! Most of the day will be spent out on the sea in search for humpback and finback whales along with large varieties of sea birds.
New Brunswick’s motto is “more whales, more often” so keep your eyes peeled for their tell tale signs and enjoy the ride.
Seal Cove:
We’ll be cruising away from Seal Cove, a new place to explore, so let’s arrive early to peruse the historic smoked herring sheds and search for treasures at Wilcox’s gift shop and Patty’s Book Room.
Let’s not miss the local art at the Grand Manan Art Gallery along the way. Once back at the Marathon, enjoy the night as you please.
Day Four: Kingsbrae Garden
Today we sail away and wave a fond farewell to our island home, but more coastal adventures await! We return to Blacks Harbour where a short drive brings us to the quaint St. Andrews by the Sea.
The magnificent 27-acre horticultural masterpiece Kingsbrae Garden has its home here overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay with a stunning view of Minister’s Island.
Created on the grounds of several grand old estates, it’s the perfect place to wander the meandering paths through themed gardens, past a working Dutch windmill, a cedar maze, whimsical sculptures, and furry alpaca friends. When you’re ready to take a walking break, enjoy an included lunch here at the café.
Enjoy the Night:
For one night we become a part of history among the luxury of the Algonquin Resort. After checking in, the night is yours to enjoy in town browsing the shops, finding a tasty dinner on your own, and exploring the seaside village right down to the picturesque Pendleton Lighthouse and Pagan Point Nature Preserve.
Day Five: Deer Island
It’s an island hopping day as we first ferry our way to darling Deer Island. A scenic drive will take us from north to south straight to where the Old Sow Whirlpool swirls.
The ferry ride to Campobello Island will be the best viewing point for this natural wonder of the Bay of Fundy and if the tides are right, it could be quite a scene.
Campobello Island:
Now we walk in the footsteps of the Roosevelts as we visit their magnificent 34-room summer home in an amazingly scenic setting.
We have the day to spend here touring all the cottages, enjoying an included lunch at the café, and exploring the grounds and trails.
A highlight of the afternoon is Eleanor’s Tea where we hear special stories as we sip.
Eagle Hill Bog Trail:
A unique nature treat is close by, so let’s take a stroll on the Eagle Hill Bog boardwalk trail through its unique habitat and panoramic views.
Mulholland Point Lighthouse:
Before we leave Canada, there’s one last sight to see, the wood framed octagonal tower of the Mulholland Point Lighthouse where lovely views of our next destination, Lubec Maine await.
Lovely Lubec:
It’s a short ride across the bridge back to the U.S. and our new home for two nights in a unique historic building transformed into the adorable Inn on the Wharf set along sea in quaint Lubec.
Find a tasty dinner in town and relax the evening away among the sounds of the sea.
Day Six: Explore Lubec
Take the morning to explore lovely Lubec and if interested, the McCurdy Smokehouse Museum and Mulholland Market Art Gallery.

Onto the lovely, red striped West Quoddy Lighthouse in the most dramatic picturesque setting above the sparkling sea.

Easternmost Eastport:
Now we explore easternmost Eastport, where you can stroll down Water Street lined with lovingly restored historic buildings, local galleries, and shops.
Find a tasty lunch on your own as you wander and don’t miss the colorful Eastport Fisherman Statue, sculpture of mermaid Nerida, and Nature’s Grace sculpture.
Last Night in Lubec:
Back home among Lubec’s soothing sounds of the sea, let’s enjoy one last included dinner together and toast to all the tranquil tidal treasures we’ve uncovered.
