The Stax Museum relays the story of where over 160 top 100 pop chart’s songs and a staggering 243 hits in the Top 100 R&B charts were recorded. No trip to Memphis is complete without a visit to The Peabody Hotel to see its world-famous ducks. We’ll stroll down Beale Street, the home of the Blues, where the streets are lined with bars and restaurants with free live music for your listening pleasure. We can’t miss Elvis’s birthplace in Tupelo, the Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art, and Mud Island River Walk!
Day 1. Welcome to Memphis, a city seated alongside the muddy Mississippi River, steeped in history and known as the birthplace of blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll. Our first exploration will take us to the Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art. What was once a private collection now encompasses 24,000 square feet of exhibition space with over 1,400 objects of priceless art. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty of the finest collections of Imperial Japanese jade, ivory, decorative art and precious stones on this continent. After lunch on our own on in one of the many restaurants of Beale Street, we enjoy a sightseeing cruise along the Mighty Mississippi River where we’ll learn the history of the river while riding on an authentic paddle wheeler. Next, we visit the elegant Peabody Hotel to witness the traditional Duck March where the resident ducks travel by elevator to the lobby fountain for a swim in an elaborate parade. From here it’s a short ride to our home for the next three nights at The Guest House at Graceland. Located steps from the Graceland Mansion, our resort reflects Elvis’s personal style with designs inspired by the Graceland Mansion. Tonight, enjoy an included dinner in the comfort of our hotel with a $75 food credit that is redeemable in the restaurant of your choice.
Day 2. This morning we travel to Tupelo, Mississippi, where we visit the birthplace of Elvis Aaron Presley. Here we can experience his boyhood home and museum, the chapel he attended as a child and the nearby Elvis Presley Park. The famed chapel was actually moved here since this is where Elvis was first exposed to rich Southern gospel that greatly influenced his career. Even though Elvis became a larger than life personality with a revolutionary influence on music worldwide, he always maintained a humble spirit, keeping true to his roots in Tupelo. After time to visit the downtown and an included lunch, we return to our hotel with an afternoon at our leisure to enjoy our resort, its grounds and many other amenities.
Day 3. Many have dreamed about visiting Elvis Presley’s Graceland and today, for you, that dream comes true. This morning we are treated to an excellent audio tour of the mansion, racquetball building and meditation garden that will provide a unique insight into Elvis’s personality, and how much he was loved by his family, friends and fans. Also included are exhibits showcasing Elvis’s career, cars, custom jets, wardrobe, and gold records. We’re not done with Elvis yet! Our day also includes the new Graceland Exhibition Center with rotating special exhibits and the Jungle Room Bar. Our hotel’s free shuttle and nearby location allows us time to take a break from the day, as we wish, and return later to see more Elvis. Tonight, an optional round-trip shuttle ride is included to exciting Beale Street with its many nightclubs, restaurants, and shops. We can step back in history and experience Beale Street as it was in its heyday in the roaring 20’s!
Day 4. One last full day of exploration before heading back home. First, we visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located at the original site of Stax Records. From soul music’s humble beginnings in its roots found from Southern Gospel music, the museum opens in a modest Mississippi Delta church, circa 1906 carefully reassembled inside the building. You can shake what your mama gave you on the Express Yourself dance floor, gasp in awe at the Wall of Sound containing wall to ceiling albums released by Stax, and step into a replica of legendary Studio A. There’s even a glittering, furry surprise that’s Super Fly! Now we move from soul to rock ‘n roll at Sun Studio. This is the place where musical legends and genres of the 50s from Blues and Gospel to Country and Rock ‘n’ roll have been discovered. Stand in the same spot where Elvis first recorded, hear inside stories of musical legends, see priceless memorabilia, and feel the energy of the music created here as we listen to outtakes from recording sessions. After lunch on our own in downtown Memphis, we enjoy a stroll along the Mud Island River Walk, an amazing scale model of the lower Mississippi River offering fantastic views of the Memphis skyline. From here we say goodbye and arrive shortly at the airport to board our nonstop flight home.
