Since the organizers of the Cape May Jazz Festival decided to change this year’s date to early October, we will now make Cape May a nice, quiet, off season getaway! We’ll still Jazz Up our November by visiting America’s first seashore resort with its Victorian atmosphere, narrow streets and mansions backdropped against the sea. What a beautiful place to escape to with no crowds, traffic or hustle and bustle. Just a relaxing 2 days with the sound of the ocean waves pounding on the surf and the call of seagulls in the distance. We’ll have the opportunity to stay in America’s oldest seaside resort, Congress Hall, opened in 1816. Here, we’ll be only steps away from numerous shops, restaurants, the ocean and promenade.
Day 1: Upon arrival in Cape May we enjoy lunch on our own with time to sightsee and browse in its many unique stores. This afternoon we enjoy a delightful tour that will enlighten us on the history of this exceptionally storied hotel: the historic Congress Hall Hotel. It has been delighting guests for over 200 years and was recently voted “Best Hotel in New Jersey” by Travel + Leisure and its readers. Here we delight in our splendid surroundings as we step back in time and savor the elegance and ambiance of our hotel. After getting settled in, the Historic District trolley tour will whisk you through the mansion lined streets entertaining you with enlightening stories of about this oldest seaside resort and how its survived over the years. Tonight, after an included dinner, we enjoy something really special at the Emlen Physick Estate. We will help Helen solve a mystery involving A Gloomy Apparition in a wonderful immersive theatrical event.
Day 2: Today we will visit the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood which has been a beacon of safety and assurance to mariners since the 17th century. We can take a glimpse inside this historic lighthouse and enjoy the inlet grounds which feature a Victorian Style Park and the Hereford Gardens that connect to the coastal path of the Anglesea Walk where you can experience spectacular views of the Hereford Inlet and Atlantic Ocean. The perfect tranquil setting for a relaxing stroll, photography or connecting with nature. We will travel next to our included lunch in the warm, friendly atmosphere of the Bellevue Tavern in Cape May County Courthouse. After our delicious lunch, we will explore the natural coastal and wetlands ecosystem of the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, NJ. Here we can browse through the exhibits, climb the observation tower, visit the gift shop or walk along the elevated marsh walkway and salt marsh trail offering unparalleled views and bringing you up close and personal with fiddler crabs and other marshland creatures. No matter what you choose to do here, these surroundings provide a truly beautiful and peaceful vista. After our exceptional mini vacation, we begin our drive home. Time passes quickly as we reflect on all the wonderful things we have done and seen on our tour.
