Inspiring Art & Architecture
Bartow-Pell Mansion ~ Noguchi Museum
One Day Tour ~ Saturday, May 1, 2021
and Sunday, May 2, 2021
Our day begins with a hidden artistic gem tucked away in Astoria, the Isamu Noguchi Sculpture Museum and Gardens. The museum was established and designed by the artist in his commitment to showing art in public space and is a celebration of the life of Noguchi and the extraordinary works he left behind. Besides the amazing and serene outdoor sculpture garden, you will be astonished by over 200 works of art that are housed in a renovated 1920s industrial building with 27,000 square feet of gallery space on two floors. The space also features a Museum Shop and Cafe which carry Noguchi’s lighting and furniture designs along with books and gifts. A few steps away is another little gem created in the spirit of Isamu Noguchi, the Socrates Sculpture Park, a community engaged art space that provides an open platform for public art and encourages unfettered ambition in scale and subject matter. As we stroll through the grounds you may notice that a majority of artworks are in the process of being created, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to witness the labor-intensive art making process firsthand. A memorable included lunch is next in a venue that was built by the Bohemian Citizens Benevolent Society of Astoria. The Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden carries on their tradition today and serves several Czech specialties along with Beer Garden favorites. We’ll have the special pleasure of then touring the last remaining 19th century estate in Pelham Bay Park, the Bartow-Pell Mansion. Our tour will bring history to life as we walk through the amazing architecture and period rooms of mansion and among the formal gardens.
