Alexandria Bay, a unique community in the heart of this region will be our home during our exploration of the quaint towns and waterways filled with extravagant, remote and even dark islands. Our comfortable resort with beautiful and serene water views will be the perfect place to relax after our many explorations, so grab you bags and let’s explore!
Day 1. Let the adventure begin! We’ll take a break from our drive north to stretch our legs and step back in time to the Gilded Age at the magnificent Phelps Mansion. We’ll wander through the halls of this 1871 elegant, Second Empire style home and learn the history behind its construction and wealth. After an included lunch nearby, we’ll make our way to the Rivers Edge Resort in Alexandria Bay where we’ll relax and explore the town at our leisure. Included is a $50 per person certificate for dinner at our hotel to use any night of our stay. Tonight there will be a free concert with local musicians for your pleasure at the Scenic View Park Pavilion. Enjoy!
Day 2. This morning we will be astonished by more lavish mansions and castles. Our cruise will take us through the famous Millionaires Row, a group of islands bought by America’s wealthiest families in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We’ll cruise through narrow channels, over historic sunken wrecks while gazing at the magnificent summer mansions built into the natural spaces of this amazing landscape. After lunch on your own downtown, we will indulge in mystery on a Dark Island Cruise! We’ll visit Singer Castle and learn about its mysterious history and possible hauntings during our ride and walking tour on Dark Island. Then we’ll have the pleasure of touring the extravagant Boldt Castle built on Heart Island. Our tour of this legendary castle, grounds and yacht house will give us the chance to experience the Boldt’s famous tragic love story and the magnificence of a bygone era. The rest of the evening is yours to relax and dine as you please.
Day 3. The morning may be spent browsing the specialty vendors of the Alexandria Bay Farmers Market before our exploration of the charming town of Clayton. Today, Clayton will be hosting the nation’s oldest continuous antique boat show. More than 125 boats are entered into the show by exhibitors from all over the world. While here, we’ll also tour the Antique Boat Museum that holds over 320 antique boats and thousands of artifacts. After lunch on your own and time to wander downtown Clayton, we’ll climb aboard a boat of our own; one with a glass bottom that will reveal unparalleled views of underwater life as we cruise the St. Lawrence River to the Rock Island Lighthouse. Once here, we’ll visit the lightkeepers home, museum and gift shop and catch amazing scenery and interesting sights along the way. Once back on land we’ll stop by the Thousand Islands Winery for a tasting and tour before heading back to Alexandria Bay for an included dinner and the rest of the evening on your own.
Day 4. Where the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario meet is the classic river town of Cape Vincent. Our exploration begins here today in this historic, quaint town with a strong French heritage. Our first stop is the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse and its spectacular views and visitors center. Then onto explore the town where you can visit the Cape Vincent historical museum, Breakwater Art Gallery, Cape Vincent Fisheries and Aquarium, or just browse the shops dotted along the river. You’ll be sure to find a superb restaurant for lunch on your own. Our afternoon will be spent tasting gifts from the vines at the historic Deerlick Farm. The Cape Winery and Deerlick Farm Vineyards offers the French definition of a perfect vineyard site from which we’ll have a taste in the historic tasting room and experience the vineyard life.
Day 5. Before we head home, there’s time to explore one more exceptional place, Skaneateles, a lovely Finger Lakes village. Here we’ll find a vibrant downtown filled with unique shops and restaurants alongside a clear blue lake which combine into a one-of-a-kind, relaxing afternoon. There will be time to stretch your legs, wander the town and find lunch on your own. From here we return home to New Jersey on our relaxing scenic drive. Ó 2020 Group Tours & Travel
